Ex-mayor heads county council

Cllr Taylor was inaugurated at a ceremony at County Hall in Exeter last Thursday following a two-year stint as vice-chairman. Brenda has been Liberal Democrat county councillor for Exmouth's Brixington and Withycombe division since 2001. During that time she has held positions on various committees including health and overview scrutiny, schools transport appeals committee, foster carers panel and the Dental Task Force. She is also the county council's champion for equality and diversity.Cllr Taylor moved to Exmouth from Wiltshire in 1969 and has lived in the town ever since. From 1998 to 2000 she was Mayor of Exmouth and has been a member of East Devon District Council since 1984. Cllr Taylor was also previously a governor of Hillcrest School and Marple School."It was the voluntary work that I carried out locally which led me into politics and I believe the interests of the community should be at the heart of my work," she said.Married with two sons and two grandsons, Cllr Taylor is a retired dental nurse who enjoys golf, swimming, cycling and walking and has always taken a keen interest in the needs of her community."During my time with the county I have enjoyed taking an active interest in the future of health care provision for the people of Devon and in particular the needs of the elderly population."I aim to make myself available to local people as much as possible whether that be at the end of a phone or by visiting them, and this is a role which I look forward to continuing and indeed developing through my position as chairman of the county."I have very much enjoyed my two years as vice chairman and hope I can match the excellent work carried out by my predecessor, Cllr Des Shadrick.

The court's ruling upheld the suit by Cooper University Hospital and Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, both in Camden, and the Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills, against their competitor, Virtua-West Jersey Hospital in Marlton, one of the nine New Jersey hospitals in the study. The decision overturned an earlier ruling by a state appellate court in favor of the nine hospitals and the commissioner.
