Elderly doing DIY dentistry, says MP

Do-it-yourself dental care is becoming a common practice among elderly people frustrated at waiting years for appointments to see dentists, a federal Labor MP has told parliament.

South Australian MP Steven Georganas listed several cases of elderly people in his Hindmarsh constituency who have resorted to extreme practices to have treatment or dentures fixed.

He recounted the case of Ted Crowder, in his late 70s, who had been waiting years to have his dentures readjusted, enduring discomfort and ultimately ulcers.

"He resorted to becoming a do-it-yourself dentist, taking his dentures out to the tool shed, pulling out his tools that he used as a toolmaker and tailoring them with files and other items from his toolbox so that they can better fit in his mouth and gums," Mr Georganas said.
